Alasdair Gold hints at potential ‘problems’ for Spurs in summer transfer window

Alasdair Gold has claimed that Tottenham could have trouble shifting out some players in the summer transfer window, particularly if Lyon and Villarreal do not take up the options to sign Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso respectively.

The January transfer window saw a midfield clear out at Spurs, with Ndombele and Lo Celso leaving on loan and Dele Alli completing a permanent transfer to Everton.

In addition, Bryan Gil also completed a temporary move to Valencia but according to reports, Tottenham expect the winger to return in the summer and are hopeful the 20-year-old will have a future in North London (Evening Standard).

The Lilywhites’ only two acquisitions in the January window were Juventus duo Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur.

Gold has explained that Conte will be expecting to be backed with a lot more singings in the summer and the Italian will also want to shift several others at the end of the season.

When asked Tottenham can expect a big summer transfer window as part of a Q&A on Football.London, the journalist responded: “I think it’s the crunch one in terms of Tottenham’s relationship with Antonio Conte.

“Some of the prep work was done in this winter window but the overhaul needs to continue in the summer if he’s going to have a squad he can compete with.

“Conte has been very honest and stated it will take more than one or two transfer windows to get the club back to where it was again and then push beyond that.

“The key will be to show Conte that Spurs have ambition like him. He’s admitted he needs to feel that in his career.

“Similar problems will arise if Lyon and Villarreal do not take up the purchase options on Ndombele and Lo Celso as Spurs will have to try to move them on again in the summer, although with regular football both could be easier to sell then.

“If they do move on then Spurs’ wage bill will be shorn of a number of their biggest earners which will help them in the summer.

“I get the feeling there will be more departures in the summer because Conte will have identified those players he wanted out now and those who he could use until the end of the season before upgrading them.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Spurs will be hoping that even if Villareal and Lyon do not take the options to sign Lo Celso and Ndombele respectively, the two midfielders could do well enough on loan to attract offers from other clubs in the summer.

However, I doubt we would get over £35m for Ndombele and over £20 for Lo Celso. So, the club would likely have to accept significant losses on both players.
