Alasdair Gold is ‘sure’ Spurs will at least ‘enquire’ about defender in January

Alasdair Gold is sure that Tottenham will enquire about the availability of Alessandro Bastoni again at the end of the season after failing to get a deal for the Inter Milan star over the line during the summer.

Reports indicated during the summer transfer window that Bastoni was Antonio Conte’s top target for the left centre-back role (Football.London).

However, the Lilywhites were not able to get a deal for the Italy international over the line and decided to snap up Clement Lenglet on a season-long loan from Barcelona instead.

Although Lenglet has enjoyed a promising start to his time at Spurs, the North London club do not have the option to make the deal permanent and would thus have to negotiate with Barca next summer if they want to hang on the Frenchman (Fabrizio Romano).

Reports from Italy have backed Conte’s men to reignite their interest in Bastoni next summer, with Inter Live reporting last month that Tottenham are willing to pay €50m (£43.7m) for the 23-year-old’s services.

Gold believes that a left-sided centre-back will be a priority for Spurs once again next summer and backed the club to test the waters for the Inter star once again.

The journalist said on his YouTube channel: “I’m sure Spurs will enquire, but I struggle to see why Inter would let him go in January. It doesn’t really make any sense. I don’t think I’ve seen anything about the contract.

“The Lenglet deal being a loan without an option to buy just lends itself in my head to a summer move for a big, expensive player maybe. And that could be Bastoni.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I am convinced that a left-sided centre-back will be on Conte’s wishlist next summer, whether it is Bastoni, Gvardiol, Ndicka, Torres, Hincapie or some other player.

That is why Davies and Lenglet are likely battling for one squad position. Conte will have to decide at the end of the season whether to hang on to Davies or to sign Lenglet permanently and cash in on the Welshman.
