Alasdair Gold has said that he is waiting to see what Lucas Bergvall’s arrival at Tottenham could mean for Alfie Devine’s future at the North London club.
Bergvall, who has emerged as one of the best young talents in Swedish football over the last six months, completed a deadline-day move to Tottenham in January.
Spurs have reportedly paid an initial fee of £8.4m to Djurgarden, with the fee potential rising to £16.4m if certain performance-related add-ons are met (Expressen).
The 18-year-old has been loaned back to Djurgarden until the end of the season but he admitted in his first interview with Tottenham’s official channel that he cannot wait to join up with the Lilywhites squad, which he described as a “young, hungry, team”.
He might perhaps be competing for a place in Tottenham’s first-team squad with another teenage midfield starlet in the form of Devine.
Could Alfie Devine have to fight Bergvall for his place?
The youngster has been loaned out to Plymouth Argyle in order to test himself in the Championship after impressing for Port Vale in the first half of the season, and Gold believes that the England Under-20 international is quite similar to Bergvall.
The journalist said on the Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham Podcast: “I’m intrigued to see if Devine and Bergvall can both fit into this team next season because there was a lot of hope that Devine would come in next season and push as a real Maddison understudy, but Bergvall is that kind of player as well.”

I do not see Bergvall and Devine competing for the same place as the former is much more of a box-to-box player while the latter is more of a number eight/ten, who would want to play closer to goal.
Devine could be used in rotation with Maddison and perhaps even the wide players while the Swedish starlet will compete with the likes of Bentancur and Sarr.
