Alasdair Gold on what he has heard about Tottenham’s plans for Spence

Alasdair Gold has revealed that there does not appear to be any indication that Tottenham are set to loan out Djed Spence in January.

Spence did not start a single game in the first part of the 2022-23 campaign following his switch from Middlesbrough in the summer (Transfermarkt).

The right-back has had an opportunity to work closely with Antonio Conte and his coaching staff in Tottenham’s mini-preseason over the last couple of weeks, and he started both of the behind-closed-doors friendlies against Motherwell and Peterborough Under-21s.

Reports have indicated over recent weeks that Antonio Conte is prioritising strengthening at right wing-back in January (90 min).

Some publications have suggested that the North London club could loan out the 22-year-old so that he gets regular game time under his belt during the second part of the campaign (The Times).

However, Gold has now revealed that nothing about a potential January move for Spence has been communicated by the club so far.

The journalist said on his YouTube channel: “From what I understand, I was asking around a couple of days ago, it doesn’t seem like there’s been any indication to Spence or his people yet that he’s to be sent out on loan or anything like that.

“So at this moment in time, nothing about that has been communicated. Whether that changes with what happens in the January transfer window, hopefully, that’s a good sign at the moment that there’s been no discussion about changing his future.”

If Tottenham do sign a right wing-back and cash in on Emerson, Spence’s game time will still be quite limited in the second half of the campaign, with Doherty and the new signing both potentially ahead of him in the pecking order.

So, I think that it would be in Spurs’ best interest to loan Spence out to a Premier League club where he has a better chance of playing regularly.
