Alasdair Gold predicts who could be Tottenham’s first signing of the summer

Alasdair Gold has opined that following Timo Werner’s showing against Nottingham Forest on Sunday, the Tottenham hierarchy may be ready to sign off on the deal to bring the wide-forward to the club permanently in the summer.

Werner has continued to get better with each game since he arrived on loan from RB Leipzig in January and the 28-year-old arguably delivered his best performance in a Spurs shirt against Forest.

The German was relentless and direct all game, going past Neco Williams several times and delivering some dangerous crosses into the box.

It was one such cross that helped Tottenham take the lead as Werner’s low ball in was turned into his own net by Murillo.

If Ange Postecoglou had not already made up his mind about completing a permanent deal for the former Chelsea man, his performance yesterday would have gone a long way towards convincing the Spurs boss.

Tottenham have the option of signing Werner permanently for around £15m this summer and reports from Germany over recent weeks indicate that the player is keen to remain at the North London club (Sport Bild).

Alasdair Gold predicts a potential early Spurs signing

Gold believes that on the back of Werner’s showing against Nuno Espirito Santo’s men, he could be the first player to be signed by Spurs when the transfer window opens in June.

The journalist wrote via Football.London: “Werner may well be the first deal technical director Johan Lange and the club sanction this summer, especially with the player making an immediate mark for the Lilywhites and with the transfer fee very favourable to Tottenham.

“The attacker is thriving under Postecoglou at present and his January signing has proved to be a masterstroke by the football club. That fee of £15.5 million may turn out to be an absolute snip over the coming years if Werner is to become a Tottenham player on a permanent basis.”

There is no doubt that the signing has proven a masterstroke for Spurs and Leipzig would perhaps be ruing the fact that they attached such a low permanent clause in the loan deal. It is absolutely a no-brainer for Tottenham to activate the option.
