Alasdair Gold reports Spurs have ‘retained their interest’ in 23-year-old target

Alasdair Gold has revealed that Alessandro Bastoni remains on Tottenham’s radar and explained that the North London club’s pursuit of the centre-back could depend on his contract decision over the coming months.

To the disappointment of some Spurs fans, the Lilywhites did not strengthen in central defence during the January transfer window, prioritising reinforcements at right wing-back and upfront instead.

Reports indicate that Antonio Conte’s men are expected to make wholesale changes at the back in the summer, with the club thought to be keen on signing two centre-backs (The Athletic).

Italian publications suggested last month that the Spurs head coach remains keen on reuniting with Bastoni after the Premier League club failed with an approach for the 23-year-old last summer (CMW.it).

The Italy international’s current contract at the San Siro runs out in 2024 (Transfermarkt) and Gold believes that the defender will be near the top of Spurs’ wishlist if he does not put pen to paper over a new deal with the Serie A club.

When asked if Tottenham could reignite their interest in Bastoni, the journalist said in a Football.London Q&A: “Much depends on these new contract talks and whether Bastoni signs on at Inter again.

“Spurs have retained their interest in the Italy international and he is still among their top summer targets. Of course, with just a year left on his contract at that point, his price tag also drops a fair bit.”

Spurs Web Opinion

There is no doubt in my mind that Bastoni would be Tottenham’s top target if he does not sign a new deal but my gut instinct is that the 23-year-old will commit his future to Inter.

With Gvardiol now seemingly out of our reach, given how much his value has inflated over recent months, Tottenham will likely pursue one of Evan Ndicka or Piero Hincapie for the left centre-back role next summer.
