Alasdair Gold reports what he has heard about Djed Spence behaviour behind the scenes

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has revealed that Djed Spence has been ‘a model professional’ despite his lack of game time this season.

Many Spurs fans were hoping that Spence would be handed his first start for Tottenham in the FA Cup clash against Portsmouth on Saturday but the 22-year-old had to make do with a place on the bench, with Emerson Royal starting at right wing-back.

The former Middlesbrough man came on for Ryan Sessegnon after 77 minutes, with Emerson moving over to left wing-back and Spence taking his place on the right in the latter stages of the encounter to help the home side see out a 1-0 win.

Tottenham’s assistant head coach Cristian Stellini remarked after the game that Spence is ‘increasing his progression’ and ‘improving a lot’ (Football.London).

Gold has now revealed that despite going through a ‘difficult time’, the young right-back has been a ‘model professional’ right from the start of the campaign.

The journalist added that Spence has not complained and has continued to work hard in training, absorbing all the instructions of the coaching staff.

Gold added that amidst loan interest from Bayer Leverkusen and three other Premier League clubs, the England Under-21 international is awaiting a decision from Tottenham on his future.

Spence is thought to be keen on becoming a ‘big success’ at Spurs and there is said to be no desire from the player or the club to send him back down to a team in the Championship.

If, as expected, Spurs sign another right wing-back and move on Emerson Royal, it would be quite selfish of the club and Conte to hang on to Spence, considering that Perisic can also be used on the right if there is an injury crisis.

The 22-year-old is not likely to get any game time at all in North London this campaign and the youngster needs to be loaned out to a Premier League club so that he can demonstrate that he is good enough for the highest level.
