Alasdair Gold responds to rumours linking Spurs with Houssem Aouar

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has claimed that there is nothing concrete to suggest that Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing a move for Houssem Aouar this summer.

Recent reports have indicated that Tottenham and Arsenal could go head-to-head for Aouar’s signature this summer.

Some sources have suggested that the great relationship Spurs have with Lyon could give them the edge in the race for the 23-year-old, who is also allegedly being courted by Manchester United and Liverpool.

It has even been claimed that the Lilywhites have expressed a willingness to offer Tanguy Ndombele back to the Ligue 1 club in exchange for Aouar.

However, Gold has now poured cold water on the speculation, suggesting that the Lyon star is merely a player that the North London club have followed and that they are unlikely to make an offer for him.

The journalist added that strengthening in central defence is Fabio Paratici’s number one priority this summer.

When asked whether there was any truth to the reports linking Spurs with a move for the Lyon man, Gold said: “I know this will probably upset people who have decided they want him but, at this current moment in time, there does not appear to be anything concrete in that link, just a player the club have looked at in recent seasons.

“As I’ve said before Tottenham are very much focusing on getting central defenders in through the door first and they’re working through that renowned Fabio Paratici method of negotiating for up to 10 players in that position before making the move on one or potentially, in this case, two of them.

“Whether they come back around for Aouar later in the window is another thing (and whether he will still be available), but he doesn’t sound like a priority right now with any funds being put towards Nuno Espirito Santo’s defence.”

While Auour’s talent is not in any doubt, he is quite similar to some of the players already in our squad. So a move for the 23-year-old would not make much sense unless we were to sell one of Ndombele or Lo Celso.
