Alasdair Gold reveals Antonio Conte ‘really likes’ 25-year-old Spurs star

Alasdair Gold has revealed that Antonio Conte has taken a real liking to Davinson Sanchez since he arrived at Tottenham Hotspur.

Spurs paid £42m to sign Sanchez from Ajax in the summer of 2017 – a club record fee at the time (BBC Sport).

After a promising start to his Tottenham career, the Colombian found himself struggling for game time during parts of Jose Mourinho’s reign at the club.

The 25-year-old came close to departing the North London club around 12 months ago, with reports indicating at the time that Spurs were happy to cash in on him (The Sun).

However, Sanchez’s form has improved considerably over the last couple of months, with the defender taking advantage of the injury to Cristian Romero to show Conte what he can offer.

The former Ajax man has demonstrated that he is equipped to fulfil the demands of the right side centre-back role in Conte’s back three.

Gold has now said that the Italian has no plans of moving Sanchez on anytime soon.

He said on his YouTube channel: “He really likes Sanchez. If you’re not aware of this, Conte really likes him.

“He keeps talking about how much he’s improved since he’s been there.

“So anyone that’s hoping for a Davinson Sanchez exit very soon, it’s probably not going to happen right now.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I was one of Sanchez’s harshest critics until last season but I have been pleasantly surprised with how well he has down under Conte.

The 25-year-old seems to have eliminated the lapses in concentration he used to suffer from regularly under previous regimes.

One can argue that it is because he is now a lot more confident with regular game time under his belt, which he did not get under Mourinho.

While I still have my doubts over whether Sanchez is the answer over the long term, he has demonstrated that he can be a valuable squad player for us.
