Alasdair Gold reveals complications Spurs are facing in defensive rebuild

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has explained that Tottenham Hotspur need to sell one of their central defenders before bringing another one in.

Spurs have already snapped up Cristian Romero from Atalanta and the Argentine’s first start for the club did not go according to plan as Nuno Espirito Santo’s men were beaten 1-0 by Paces De Ferriera in the first leg of the Europa Conference League playoff.

Gold claimed a couple of weeks ago that Tottenham were set to prioritise signing another centre-back and a right-back after sealing Romero’s capture.

However, the journalist has now explained that those deals might not be straightforward due to the North London club’s struggles to shift out some of their deadwood.

He points out that apart from Romero, Spurs already have Eric Dier, Davinson Sanchez, Joe Rodon, Japhet Tanganga and Ben Davies, who can all play at centre-back and the club would thus need to cash in one at least one of them.

He also adds that Sanchez, who looked the most likely to leave Spurs, has impressed Nuno Espirito Santo so far, which further complicates matters.

We are certainly not the only club in Europe who are struggling to move on some of their deadwood.

Clubs around the continent are struggling financially due to the pandemic, which is why there has not been much interest in the likes of Sanchez, Sissoko and Aurier.

Perhaps Partici will have to do part-exchange deals in order to get any value for these players in the market.
