Alasdair Gold reveals Conte is expected to change formation over coming weeks

Alasdair Gold has revealed that Antonio Conte is expected to make changes to his starting eleven and formation over the coming weeks.

The Italian decided to implement a 3-4-3 and stuck with the same starting eleven for both of his matches in charge against Vitesse Arnhem and Everton.

The 52-year-old went with a back three of Eric Dier, Cristian Romero and Ben Davies, with Emerson Royal and Sergio Reguilon as full-backs.

Playing two sitters in midfield in the form of Oliver Skipp and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg allowed Conte to field a three-man attack of Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and Lucas Moura.

However, Gold has now said that there’s an expectation within the club that Conte could shift to a 3-4-1-2 in the coming weeks as the width provided by Emerson and Reguilon makes it unnecessary to have wingers.

When asked by a fan in a Q&A on Football.London if Conte could tweak the formation after the international break, the journalist responded: “Yes, there’s an expectation within the club that the starting XI and formation will change over the coming weeks.

“I think the width from the wing-backs negates the need for wingers up front as well so I think we’ll see a shift to a 3-4-1-2 and yes I reckon two or three faces in the team will be different within a month’s time.”

However, Gold dismissed the idea of Conte potentially converting the likes of Moura or Steven Bergwijn into wing-backs as he has done with Victor Moses at Chelsea.

He added: “As for converted wing-backs, Reguilon and Emerson (as well as Sessegnon and Doherty) have the ability to carry out the role. So I’m not sure he needs to convert anyone particularly but who knows what the future holds for Lucas/Bergwijn if he did go down that route.”

A 3-4-1-2 would make sense as it would allow Conte to get one of Lo Celso or Ndombele into the side to add some creativity. I also feel that Kane would be much more effective upfront with Son alongside him as it felt like he was a little isolated at Goodison Park on Sunday.
