Alasdair Gold reveals Conte is ‘very pleased’ with 22-year-old’s progress

According to journalist Alasdair Gold, Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte is very happy with the progress Ryan Sessegnon has been making at the club.

Sessegnon signed for Spurs in 2019 with plenty of hype about his ability. His time in North London hasn’t been easy though, with injury blighting much of his early career with Spurs.

Since Antonio Conte took over at Spurs in November 2021 however, Sessegnon has gone from strength to strength. The young defender has now established himself as an important player in Conte’s squad.

Last season, Sessegnon managed two assists in 22 appearances in all competitions (Transfermarkt). He already has a goal to his name this season (Transfermarkt) and is looking more dangerous going forward than ever before.

It’s always been up for debate what the best position for Sessegnon is, with stints at left back and left midfield in the past. He has adapted perfectly to Conte’s wing-back system though and looks to be flourishing in the role.

On the Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham Podcast, journalist Alasdair Gold discussed the 22-year-old Spurs player and gave an insight into how Conte will be feeling about Sessegnon’s development.

Gold said: “We’re just thinking about injuries aren’t we? That’s the main thing with Sessegnon, steer clear of injuries. He’s gone off with the England U21s now, please, please don’t do anything there because he’s had a few problems with them in the past.

“The more confidence he has with getting minutes and not getting injured, we’ll see him develop, Conte is very pleased with him and who better a mentor to have than one of the best in the world in that position in Perisic?”

Spurs Web Opinion

I’ve been really impressed with how far Ryan Sessegnon has come in such a short space of time. He’s gone from being a peripheral player within the Spurs squad, to now being part of a key rotation on that left-hand side with Ivan Perisic.

His attitude and adaptability have to be commended for how he has taken to Conte’s system. It’s easy to forget just how young Sessegnon is too, and it’s exciting to think how much more potential he has to unlock under Conte.
