Alasdair Gold reveals Conte likes 24-year-old ‘a lot’ despite not starting him much

Alasdair Gold has revealed that Antonio Conte likes Steven Bergwijn a lot and he would keep the winger at the club next season if the decision were up to him.

Bergwijn has made an impact when Conte has handed him opportunities, most notably in Tottenham’s dramatic late comeback against Leicester back in January.

However, the Dutchman has fallen even further down the pecking order since the arrival of Dejan Kulusevski, who has enjoyed a tremendous start to life at Spurs and made himself undroppable.

Reports over recent weeks have indicated that Bergwijn is expected to leave the club in the summer, with the likes of Ajax (Fabrizio Romano- Here We Go podcast at 15:53) and AC Milan (CalicoMercato) thought to be keen on snapping him up.

Gold has now said that despite Bergwijn’s lack of game time recently, Conte likes what the Netherlands international has to offer and the Spurs boss would try to convince the winger to stay.

However, the journalist explained that the former PSV Eindhoven man may want to leave rather than play a bit-part role at Spurs next season.

When asked as part of a Q&A on Football.London what the future holds for Bergwijn, Gold responded: “I think it’s going to depend on Steven Bergwijn himself and perhaps how hard Ajax push for him this summer.

“Conte likes him a lot and if it was down to him, he would keep him.

“The Dutchman is full of confidence right now after his three international goals in two games and the strike against Newcastle but he’s just unfortunate that Spurs’ front three are flying at the moment.

“Opportunities will arise next season and there should be plenty of matches to be played, but for Bergwijn he will obviously want to be a regular starter rather than a bit-part player.

“It would be Spurs’ loss if he were to go and Conte will no doubt attempt to convince him to stay, but much depends on where the player’s head is at and just how much Ajax can throw at a transfer they desperately want to make.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I would be extremely surprised if Bergwijn is still at the club next season. I rate the 24-year-old very highly but I expect him to push for a move in the summer.

I would personally prefer to keep Bergwijn over Lucas Moura but the Brazilian seems more content at being a squad player than the 24-year-old, which is understandable given that both players are at different stages of their careers.
