Alasdair Gold reveals how Luis Diaz could change Tottenham’s striker plans

Alasdair Gold has suggested Tottenham could delay their plans to sign a striker until the summer if they can secure the signing of Porto winger Luis Diaz in the coming days.

Tottenham are in talks to sign Colombia international Diaz, with Portuguese journalist Pedro Sepulveda reporting the North London club submitted an opening offer worth 45 million (£37.6m) plus bonuses on Tuesday.

The Guardian have claimed Porto have rejected Spurs’ opening offer and have reiterated the 25-year-old, who has scored 14 goals in 18 league games (Transfermarkt), has a release clause sitting at £66 million.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has since issued an update on the situation stating a deal is currently ‘not easy’ to achieve, but negotiations are still ongoing between both clubs.

As such, Gold believes Spurs have thrust their pursuit of Diaz to the top of their list of priorities this week – a move that could put their current chase for a striker into doubt.

Antonio Conte has insisted that Spurs should sign another striker to support Harry Kane (Football.London), but Gold claims an approach to do so could be delayed until the end of the season if Diaz is acquired.

Speaking on his YouTube channel (26/01/22, 11:55), Gold said: “From what I understand, if they were to sign Diaz, they would probably shelve the striker move until the summer – unless a good value option came up.

“It would be easier to buy a striker in the summer. There are more options and the prices are lower.

“Whereas now, [to get] a striker who can do the job, there’s less likelihood of clubs allowing them to leave midway through a season.”

Diaz is the big name that Spurs are after heading into deadline day, but everyone knows just how tricky this deal will be to complete. Spurs do have the options to fill in at striker in case, but they should make acquiring one a priority in the summer at minimum.
