Alasdair Gold reveals Postecoglou already values Spurs 18-year-old highly

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has said that the expectations at Tottenham Hotspur are very much for Ashley Phillips to be a big part of the club’s future.

Phillips, who was signed by Spurs last summer after a breakthrough season at Blackburn Rovers, might have been disappointed not to get any opportunities during the first half of the season, particularly given the injuries that Ange Postecoglou was dealing with.

The Lilywhites made the decision to loan the youngster out to the Plymouth so that he could get competitive action under his belt and the 18-year-old has instantly established himself as a vital cog in the Pilgrims backline.

The teenager has been earning rave reviews for his performances at Home Park Stadium so far, with manager Ian Foster admitting a few days ago that he has been very pleased with the on-loan Spurs man (PlymouthLive).

Postecoglou is a big fan of Ashley Phillips

While looking at the various Spurs loanees and the club’s plans for them, Gold has now remarked that Phillips is expected to be part of the first-team set-up at Hotspur Way over the coming years.

The journalist says that Ange Postecoglou believes that the former Blackburn Rovers star has ‘plenty of potential’ and adds that the centre-back’s showing at Plymouth have ‘belied his age’.

Ange has a big decision to make on whether to sign another centre-back next summer or to use Phillips as the fourth choice. Perhaps Spurs will be tempted to loan the 18-year-old out to a top-flight club so that he can test himself at Premier League level.
