Alasdair Gold reveals Spurs are ‘favourites’ to sign England international this summer

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur are leading the race to sign West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone this summer.

Hugo Lloris is expected to remain as Tottenham’s number one next season after the Frenchman signed a two-year contract extension with Spurs in January.

However, the North London club might be on the lookout for another goalkeeper this summer as they are not expected to take the option to sign Pierluigi Gollini permanently (Goal).

The Daily Mail reported recently that Johnstone is one of the options Spurs are eyeing as a backup to Lloris but the report added the Lilywhites may face competition from the likes of Newcastle, West Ham and Southampton for the West Brom goalkeeper’s signature.

Gold has now revealed that it is Antonio Conte’s men who are leading the race to snap up Johnstone when his contract at the Hawthorns runs out this summer.

The report reveals the 29-year-old’s homegrown status appeals to Spurs managing director of football Fabio Paratici.

The journalist also asserts there is a belief at Spurs that Johnstone would be able to push Lloris for the number one spot and eventually succeed the 35-year-old between the sticks.

Gold wrote: ‘football.london understands that Spurs are currently the favourites to tie up a deal to bring 29-year-old West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone to the club in July when his contract ends with the Midlands side.’

Johnstone is a top goalkeeper, who is proven in the Premier League, and he is as good a number two as Spurs can get. However, the challenge would be in convincing the 29-year-old to join Spurs over the likes of Newcastle, where he would be the clear first choice.

The Baggies shot-stopper would want to give himself the best chance of making the England squad for the Qatar World Cup and so, he might want a guarantee of being the number one at his next club, which Spurs cannot provide.
