Alasdair Gold reveals Spurs star has started pre-season training ‘earlier than expected’

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has revealed that Sergio Reguilon returned for pre-season training last week to work on his fitness after picking up an injury towards the end of last season.

Barring the players who were involved in Nations League fixtures last month, the majority of the Tottenham squad returned to Hotspur Way to begin their pre-season preparations on Monday.

It was previously reported that Matt Doherty, Japhet Tanganga and Oliver Skipp had reported to the training ground last week as they were out injured towards the end of the 2021/22 campaign.

Gold has now revealed that Reguilon also joined the trio back at Hotspur Way last week, earlier than he was expected to.

The journalist explained that on the back of the groin problem that the Spaniard suffered last season, he decided to turn up early to work on fitness.

Reports over recent weeks have indicated that Spurs are ready to cash in on Reguilon this summer (CalcioMercatoWeb) after the club strengthened at left wing-back with the addition of Ivan Perisic.

Reguilon’s attitude and commitment cannot be faulted and the left-back also seems to be quite popular among his teammates.

I suspect Conte would have been happy to keep the 25-year-old around as a squad player had he shown more signs of being able to adapt to the wing-back role last season.

However, while the Spaniard is a competent full-back, he evidently lacks the composure in the final third to operate as a wing-back in Conte’s system.
