Alasdair Gold reveals Spurs’ preference over Japhet Tanganga loan situation

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur would prefer to see Japhet Tanganga head out to a British club, rather than one on the continent.

After bursting onto the scene under Jose Mourinho in the second half of the 2019/20 campaign, Tanganga was unable to build on his impressive start, partly due to injury problems.

The Spurs academy graduate has been used in a number of different roles across the backline but he found game time hard to come by last season.

The Telegraph reported on Wednesday that Galatasaray had made a loan offer for the 22-year-old.

Gold has now backed up that claim but adds that the deal is unlikely to go through since Spurs would prefer to loan him out to a British club.

The journalist explains that Tanganga is not considered to be first-choice by Nuno Espirito Santo in any role across the backline.

Should he head out of the door in North London to continue his development, it could pave the way for Spurs to finally move for Bologna’s Takehiro Tomiyasu.

Spurs Web Opinion

Last season seemed like a wasted year in Tanganga’s development. I expected the 22-year-old to be loaned out in January and with hindsight, that would have likely been the right move to make despite Aurier’s and Doherty’s struggles.

If we do make Tanganga available on loan, I can see a few bottom half Premier League clubs being interested in his services. Staying at Spurs and playing Europa Conference League matches is not going to be sufficient for his development.
