Alasdair Gold reveals what Conte has told Joe Rodon privately

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has revealed that Antonio Conte has told Joe Rodon he has to compete with Eric Dier for a place in Tottenham’s starting eleven.

Conte has so far preferred a back three of Dier in the middle, Ben Davies on the left and Cristian Romero on the right.

The Italian brought Japhet Tanganga into the starting eleven against Leeds following Cristian Romero’s injury.

The Tottenham boss rang the changes for the Europa Conference League clash against NS Mura on Thursday, with Davinson Sanchez playing as the left-centre-back and Rodon starting as the central sweeper.

Neither managed to stake a claim for a place in the starting eleven, with Rodon eventually being replaced by Dier in the 54th minute as Tottenham were chasing the game.

According to Gold, the Wales international has been informed that the only position he will be competing for is the central role in the back three, which means he will have to displace Dier from the team.

Spurs Web Opinion

The central sweeper role is where Rodon plays for Wales and it does not come as a surprise that Conte has identified that as his best position. There is a lot of hype around Rodon among Spurs fans but the reality is the 24-year-old has looked quite error-prone whenever he gets an opportunity.

Some Spurs fans seem willing to forgive Rodon for any mistakes while nitpicking on every little thing that Dier does wrong. I cannot see the Welshman displacing Dier from the starting lineup anytime soon. I would like to see the former Swansea man loaned out in January if Conte brings in another centre-back.
