Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has revealed Toby Alderweireld informed Tottenham Hotspur of his desire to leave after being in and out of the side last season.
Tottenham confirmed today that they had reached an agreement with Qatari club Al-Duhail SC for the transfer of Alderweireld.
The Belgian posted an emotional farewell message, thanking Spurs fans for their support during his six years in North London.
Gold has now explained the circumstances behind the 32-year-old’s exit, revealing that the centre-back had made it clear to the club that his future lay elsewhere.
Returning to the Netherlands or moving back home to Belgium was allegedly the former Ajax man’s preferred choice but it is revealed that the transfer fee and the player’s salary proved to be a roadblock.
Gold also stated that none of Europe’s big clubs came in for Alderweireld.
He explained that the approach from Al-Duhail suited all parties as they were ready to give the defender the wages he wanted while also being prepared to pay more than £10m to Spurs.
Spurs Web Opinion
The fact that none of Europe’s top clubs came in for Alderweireld despite the modest transfer fee could be viewed as proof that 32-year-old’s time at the top level was up. He certainly deserves a big payday in Qatar before settling back home with his family.
