Alasdair Gold reveals who is likely to captain Spurs when Son leaves for Asian Cup

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has revealed that Ben Davies is likely to be handed the captain’s armband by Ange Postecolgou after Son Heung-min jets off to the Middle East for the Asian Cup.

It was initially reported a couple of weeks ago that Son would link up with the South Korea squad following Tottenham’s clash against Bournemouth on December 31 (Steve Han).

However, Ange Postecoglou subsequently confirmed in his press conference on Wednesday that Spurs are in talks with the Korean Football Administration to explore if their captain can leave after the FA Cup clash against Burnley on January 5 (Optus Sport).

Regardless of when Son leaves, Postecoglou will have a decision to make regarding who to hand the captain’s armband to.

Tottenham’s two vice-captains, James Maddison and Cristian Romero, are currently out with injuries, with neither player expected to return within the next couple of weeks.

Gold believes that Davies, who has excelled at left centre-back over the last two months, will captain the side until Son returns from Qatar.

The journalist says that Postecoglou is a huge fan of the Wales international and is expected to count on the 29-year-old to lead the side through a tricky spell.

Davies is the obvious choice for the captaincy, given his professionalism and his vast experience. His calming presence at the back will be crucial over the next month, given that Romero has now been sidelined.
