Alasdair Gold reveals why Joe Rodon did not replace Eric Dier against Chelsea

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has revealed that Joe Rodon was not able to start Tottenham’s clash against Chelsea on Wednesday due to injury.

With Eric Dier unavailable for the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final, Antonio Conte decided to move Davinson Sanchez to the central sweeper role, with Japhet Tanganga starting at right-centre-back.

It was perhaps a surprising move considering that the Spurs boss had previously said that he sees Rodon as being Eric Dier’s cover in the centre of his back three.

Gold has now revealed that Rodon was recovering from a rib injury this week and the game came too early for him to start, which is why he was only named on the bench.

According to recent reports, the Welshman is keen on moving away from Tottenham on loan in January in order to get regular game time under his belt, with the likes of Newcastle United and Brighton thought to be interested in the 24-year-old.

It was unfortunate for Rodon to pick up an injury this week as I believe Conte would have handed the Welshman an opportunity had he been fully fit.

If Spurs sign another centre-back this month, it will be in the club’s best interest to loan Rodon out so that he can get a run of matches under his belt.
