Alasdair Gold reveals why Postecoglou laughed at top four question this week

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has revealed Ange Postecoglou is trying to change the mentality at Tottenham, wanting the players to aim higher than just a top-four finish.

It is fair to say that for the last decade and a half, Tottenham have gone into almost every season with the central aim of qualifying for the Champions League.

That is partly driven by the additional revenue that the competition brings, which helps Spurs, who are a self-sustaining club, compete with other big sides in the transfer window.

However, critics will argue that the focus on finishing in the top four has translated into cup competitions not being de-prioritised, which is why the club have not won silverware since 2008.

Postecoglou’s efforts to change Spurs expectations

Gold has now revealed that following the aftermath of Tottenham’s 3-0 loss to Fulham, Postecoglou laughed at one reporter who asked how much the result dented the club’s top-four hopes.

The journalist explained that the Australian is ‘growing exasperated’ at the line of questioning around the top four as that is not something he is used to.

Gold points out that Postecoglou’s sides have always set their aims on competing for major honours and that is the same mentality that the 58-year-old is trying to instil at Spurs.

Spurs Web Opinion

While one can understand why Postecoglou will want the players to be aiming higher than just top four, at this stage of our journey, qualifying for the Champions League has to remain a priority.

Without Champions League football, we will not be able to attract the kind of top players we need in order to close the gap with the top three.
