Alasdair Gold says 25-year-old is ‘well-regarded’ at Spurs despite complete lack of game time

Alasdair Gold has said that Brandon Austin is well-regarded at Tottenham and that they trust him to do a good job in goal if they are forced to play him.

Austin has come through the academy ranks at Tottenham and has had loan spells at Danish side Viborg and Major League Soccer outfit Orlando City in the past.

However, the goalkeeper is still waiting for his senior Spurs debut, having only featured for the club during pre-season friendlies.

The 25-year-old has been a regular on the bench over recent months and is currently serving as Guglielmo Vicario’s understudy since Fraser Forster is out with an injury.

Austin’s current contract with the club runs out this summer and Football.London reported last week that talks have already begun over a contract extension, with the conversations being described as ‘positive’.

Brandon Austin is well-respected at Tottenham

Gold has now said that the goalkeeper is thought of highly at Hotspur Way and pointed out that keeping him at the club would boost their homegrown numbers ahead of their return to Europe next season.

The journalist said on The Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham Podcast about Austin: “He’s kind of there or thereabouts. He’s very well-regarded. A good shot-stopper.

“I don’t think they’d have any qualms about putting him in there if they had to in a game. I think for the homegrown angle it’s another club-trained player.”

It is clear that Austin has impressed Rob Burch much more than Alfie Whiteman, and with the former currently in talks to extend his deal, it appears likely that Spurs will part ways with Whiteman this summer.
