Alasdair Gold says midfielder has actually been on Tottenham’s radar ‘for a few years’

Alasdair Gold has revealed that Eberechi Eze has been a long-term target for Tottenham Hotspur but stated that the Lilywhites have not made an official approach for the Crystal Palace star so far this summer.

Could Tottenham make a move for Eberechi Eze?

The speculation linking Eze with a move to Spurs has gone into hyperdrive over the last couple of weeks, with several outlets backing the club to make an offer for the attacking midfielder.

In fact, TEAMtalk even asserted a few days ago that Tottenham would be willing to break their transfer record by meeting the release clause of £68m in the player’s contract at Selhurst Park.

The report claimed that while Eze is also on the radars of Manchester City and Liverpool, he prefers a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer.

The publication asserted that Postcoglou had identified the Palace star as someone who can add an ‘x-factor’ to his side and that Spurs are now ‘edging towards’ the signing of the former QPR star.

Gold has now provided a comprehensive update on Tottenham’s pursuit of Eze, stating that the player could be a ‘gamechanger’ for the North London side.

Tottenham have liked Eberechi Eze for many years

When asked about speculation linking the England international with a move to N17, the journalist said on a Q&A in Football.London: “Spurs really like Eze. They have done for a few years. If there’s a summer to try to bring him across London then this feels like the one.

“There’s been plenty of talk about a reported release clause, with recent suggestions that it’s £60m and another £8m in add-ons, although with others suggesting that it could be a little bit more of a complicated clause than that.

“The Palace man is represented by CAA Base, an agency with close ties to Spurs with the likes of Postecoglou, Son, Maddison, Porro, Sarr and many more on their books within the club, so the dialogue and clarity on any potential transfer will be there.

“Eze was reportedly at a Tottenham game with his family and friends in Base’s box at the stadium this season. That doesn’t mean too much, as many players have done that in recent years, but it does show the links between the agency and the club.

“Tottenham have not formally made their move yet at the time of writing this and with Palace not desperate to sell or needing to for FFP, it will be interesting to see whether Spurs do try to negotiate them down from any potential release clause figure as you would expect. Competition could play a part in whether there’s any opening to do so.

“If it is a £68m release fee all in then that would break Tottenham’s record, but Eze could be a game-changer for Postecoglou, able to play through the middle or out wide. Let him flourish at the Euros as well and you run the risk of even more competition for his signature.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It does seem like Ange has envisioned a box-to-box midfield role for Eze rather than a number ten role or wide role. That is perhaps why Tottenham are seemingly prepared to break the bank to land the Crystal Palace man this summer.
