Alasdair Gold says Spurs midfielder is ‘getting closer’ to agreeing new contract

Alasdair Gold has revealed that Tottenham academy starlet Matthew Craig is now close to agreeing a new contract with the North London club.

Craig has progressed through the age group ranks at Hotspur Way, starting at Under-12 level, and now establishing himself as a key part of the club’s Under-21 set-up.

In fact, the versatile defensive midfielder, who can also operate as a centre-back and right-back, started every single game in Premier League 2 and the UEFA Youth League during the 2022-23 season (Transfermarkt).

The 20-year-old’s current deal expires this summer but his name was not part of the list of released players that Spurs announced last week.

Football.London explained a couple of days ago that this was because Tottenham had offered Craig a new contract and were waiting on a decision from the youngster.

Craig was handed his Premier League debut by interim head coach Ryan Mason on the final day of the season when he came on for the final 13 minutes of the 4-1 victory at Elland Road.

Spurs close to signing Craig to a new contract

Gold has now taken to social media to reveal that the midfielder is now edging closer to putting pen to paper on a new deal.

He wrote: “Good news on the Spurs academy front. Understand Matthew Craig is getting closer to agreeing a new deal to stay with the club. The 20-year-old had a terrific season and was a real standout in a tough year for the U21s.”

Spurs Web Opinion

This is fantastic news for Tottenham as Craig is widely thought of as one of the best young prospects in our academy setup at present.

I fully expect Postecoglou to hand the 20-year-old an opportunity to train with the first team during pre-season so that he can take a closer look at him.
