Tottenham Hotspur fans will be relieved following the latest update on Mateus Fernandes’ fitness following rumours of the midfielder having suffered a major injury.

The new Tottenham signing has impressed in the club’s first two pre-season friendlies, scoring a screamer from outside the box in the club’s 1-0 win over MK Dons.

According to reports, the staff at Spurs are very excited about Fernandes’ potential, with many convinced he can become one of the best in the world in his position.

However, there has been a lot of concern on social media among the Tottenham faithful about the 22-year-old after the club’s latest training video.

Alasdair Gold confirms Tottenham star Mateus Fernandes is not injured

Spurs released a video of the squad training in Sydney on Tuesday ahead of their friendly against Sydney FC this afternoon. While Fernandes was spotted in the gym and standing on the sidelines during training, he was not involved in the training session.

This has led to speculation on social media that the midfielder had suffered a knee injury, with some even suggesting that he may have injured his ACL.

However, Football.London’s Alsadair Gold has said that these fears about Fernandes’ injury are completely unfounded.

The journalist explains that while the former West Ham man is unlikely to start against Sydney later today, that is not due to any injury.

It is because Roberto De Zerbi has been pushing the players hard in training, especially those who returned earlier to pre-season, and the workload of various players is being managed due to fatigue and jet lag.

However, those fan fears may return this morning after the playing squad was revealed for Sydney vs Tottenham – and Fernandes is not even named on the bench.

On that twist, Alasdair Gold said: “Mateus Fernandes is among those not in the squad for the game as De Zerbi continues to monitor the fatigue of his players after tough pre-season training sessions.”

Fernandes has an exemplary fitness record

What makes the rumours about a knee injury even more bizarre is the fact that Fernandes has never suffered any injury since he first broke through at Sporting Lisbon in 2023-24.

The midfielder has never been unavailable for a match due to a fitness issue over the last two years at Southampton and West Ham.

However, given how much Spurs fans have been scarred by the club’s injury crises over the last couple of years, one can understand why some are so quick to panic about these rumours.
