Alasdair Gold sheds light on ‘indications’ Spurs are getting from Jesse Lingard’s camp

Alasdair Gold has revealed that the indications from Jesse Lingard’s camp are that he would prefer to move abroad when his contract with Manchester United runs out in the summer.

ESPN reported during the January transfer window that Spurs had expressed an interest in Lingard but United refused to enter into negotiations with the Lilywhites since they saw Antonio Conte’s men as direct rivals for Champions League qualification.

It was claimed that United’s refusal to enter into talks with Spurs or West Ham left the 29-year-old disappointed.

Fabrizio Romano revealed earlier this month on the Here We Go podcast (starting at 6:18) that Tottenham were one of three leading contenders for the England international’s signature ahead of the summer transfer window, along with West Ham and Newcastle.

Gold has now confirmed Spurs have spoken to Lingard’s representatives but added that the attacking midfielder might snub the North Londoners’ approach in favour of a move outside the Premier League.

When asked during Q&A on Football.London if Tottenham could move for free agents such as the Man Utd man, the journalist responded: “I reported a few weeks back that Spurs have spoken to Jesse Lingard’s representatives about a potential summer move.

“That could be one to come back to in a few months although there have been some indications that he may prefer a move abroad.

“Fabio Paratici does like a free transfer so I’d be stunned if Spurs don’t attempt to bring a player or two without a fee to be able to put more of their budget elsewhere.”

I believe Lingard would be a good fit for Conte’s system and he would fit what Spurs need, given that Ndombele and Lo Celso do not appear to have futures in North London.

However, a lot of the clubs outside the Premier League have seen their finances being hit quite badly by the pandemic. So, there would likely be a whole lot of competitions for free agents in the summer.
