Alasdair Gold suggests 44-year-old manager could be ‘a Pochettino in the making’

Alasdair Gold has suggested that Tottenham’s managerial target, Arne Slot, has the characteristics to evolve into the next Mauricio Pochettino.

Slot is undoubtedly the most sought-after manager from the Eredivisie, having completely transformed the Feyenoord side since taking over last summer.

The Rotterdam-based club currently sit eight points clear at the top of the table and look on course to lifting their first league title since 1999.

Multiple outlets have reported over the last few weeks that the Dutch coach is on Tottenham’s shortlist to replace Antonio Conte (The Times).

The latest such report came from The Daily Star, who claimed last weekend that the Lilywhites have narrowed down their shortlist to four names – Slot, Julian Nageslmann, Vincent Kompany and Thomas Frank.

When asked about the speculation last week, the Feyenoord boss refused to commit his future to the Eredivisie club beyond the end of the current season (1908.nl).

Gold admitted that there is a lot to like about Slot but questioned why the Spurs are not going after Pochettino.

The journalist said on the Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham Podcast: “I do like Arne Slot, the more I read about him I do quite like the idea of Arne Slot.

“He sounds like Pochettino, he sounds like a Pochettino in the making, and you know, Spurs have always looked for someone like Pochettino, which, of course, raises the question why don’t you just go for Pochettino?”

I think it is quite likely that the opposition to Pochettino’s appointment is coming from Paratici.

So, whether or not Spurs approach the Argentine could depend on the verdict of the Italian’s appeal, which will be heard on April 19.

Regardless, I do not expect Spurs to pursue Slot as it would be too big a risk, given the 44-year-old’s lack of experience in a top league.
