Alasdair Gold suggests Spurs are unlikely to spend £30m on 31-year-old target

Alasdair Gold is sceptical about suggestions that Tottenham could target Mehdi Taremi as a replacement for Harry Kane, pointing out that the Porto star’s age might put Daniel Levy off.

Tottenham fans received the news they had been dreading all summer yesterday as Harry Kane was confirmed as a Bayern Munich player.

As one would expect, several centre-forwards have been mooted as potential replacements for the England captain over the last few days, with Taremi alleged to be one of the options on the club’s list (Sacha Tavolieri).

The Iranian international has posted consistently outstanding numbers since his move to Portuguese football four years ago, finishing the 2022-23 campaign with an astonishing 31 goals and 14 assists across all competitions (Transfermarkt).

Daniel Levy unlikely to pay £30m for a 31-year-old

However, Gold is sceptical about whether Daniel Levy would want to pay around £30m for a player who will have little to no resale value.

The journalist said on his YouTube channel: “I saw Mehdi Taremi linked as well. It’s a difficult one that. A very good striker. Lots of experience. 31-years-old though. Older than Kane.

“I saw figures of £30 million touted for him. That sounds like the most un-Daniel Levy deal possible. £30 million for a 31-year-old, who I think only has one year left on his deal as well. That doesn’t strike me as the ideal Tottenham move to make.”

Postecoglou evidently prefers working with younger players rather than experienced ones, which is why I believe that Tottenham are much more likely to sign a younger centre-forward such as Gift Orban or Elye Wahi rather than Taremi.
