Tottenham Hotspur have qualified for their first ever Champions League final, however, it may have been a bittersweet moment for some of the Spurs line up.

Tottenham’s opponents, Ajax, had been the surprise package of the tournament after knocking out Juventus and Real Madrid.

With a bunch of vibrant and young players, the Dutch side had caught the eyes of the footballing world with their fast passing and fluid attacking.

Ajax also happen to be the ex-club of Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen, Christian Eriksen, and Davinson Sanchez, all current Spurs stars.

Alderweireld could be seen consoling the distraught Ajax players after the final whistle, a nice touch of respect towards his old club.

However, Toby may not even be in North London for much longer, as he enters the final year of his contract at the end of this season.

The Belgian centre back revealed last night that a return to Ajax is in his mind.

On a potential return, he said (Voetbal – as quoted by Sky Sports): “I don’t want to make too popular statements, but it is certainly 100 per cent in my head.

“I have had wonderful times here with three championships, but also lows. But my family was happy here too.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

It certainly would be a poetic return for Toby Alderweireld, but Spurs could definitely have some great years out of the defender yet. The club should concentrate on signing him up to an extra two-year extension if possible, as a player of the quality simply cannot be replaced. However, if Ajax do want him, perhaps a deal for De Ligt could be made (I wish).
