Alderweireld admits Spurs were lucky in last season’s Champions League

Tottenham Hotspur have definitely been turning the screw in the Champions League in recent years, even since they topped their group ahead of Real Madrid a couple of seasons back.

Spurs managed to beat the Spanish giants 3-1 at home and grab an away draw, also beating Borussia Dortmund home and away that season. They then went toe to toe with Juventus, losing out in the second leg by narrow margins.

The Lilywhites made it to their first-ever Champions League final last season, knocking out the likes of Dortmund, Man City, and Ajax along the way.

However, they barely escaped the group stage, as they scraped an away draw against a weakened Barcelona and relied on a PSV result on matchday six.

Toby Alderweireld insists that Spurs are no longer happy just to qualify for the Champions League, as they now want to get the results too.

He admits that the team were lucky last season, but are fully concentrated on getting out of the group again.

Toby said (Standard): “We took some steps in the last few seasons. Before we were happy to just play these games, now we’re not happy with that – we want to get results.

“Of course, we were disappointed with the last result [in the Champions League, a 2-2 draw at Olympiakos] but we didn’t lose and in the home games we’re going to try and win, so we’re going to give 100 per cent.

“These are the games [in which] we showed last season that we are up for it. We can give any team a hard day and we can beat any team.

“European nights, under the lights – it’s something special. With the fans behind us, we can create a really good atmosphere here and the team is difficult to beat. We have confidence and if we work hard like Saturday, we have a good chance to win.

“Last season shows us that there’s a way to get into the [Champions League] Final. We don’t have to think too much about the future, about semi-finals or finals, just get through this group, because last season we were lucky, to be honest.”
