Alderweireld insists that Spurs and Tanganga are heading in the right direction defensively

Tottenham Hotspur central defender, Toby Alderweireld, believes that the club are heading in the right direction in terms of defence in recent weeks.

Spurs defended extremely well against Liverpool and were unlucky to concede a goal at all against a side that have scored in every single Premier League match this season.

Tottenham also earned a rare clean sheet away to in-form Watford at the weekend, with Alderweireld at the heart of that defence.

The introduction of young Japhet Tanganga has seemingly made a difference too, as Spurs have only conceded two goals in the three games in which he has played.

Tanganga has featured at centre-back, right-back, and left-back during that time, and Alderweireld believes that he is handling everything well.

The Belgian also added that the team will continue to try and improve, and believes that they are succeeding and the three points will surely follow in the near future.

He said (Football London): “It’s not easy. But on the other hand, you only see us improving.

“In the Liverpool game, I think we defended very well. Today, in a difficult moment we defended very well and a clean sheet, the first one in a while.

“So we’re going in the right direction, especially defensively.

“I think we just try to improve our game and I think we are.

“If you see the last three games, we’re improving and that’s the way to go. If we work like this, play like this today, I think the three points will start coming.”

On Tanganga, he added: “The same [as last weekend]. Good games and today on a yellow quite quickly so that’s not easy but I think he handled it very well.

“He handled it well, he had a difficult opponent but I think he handled it well today.”
