Alderweireld reveals what Pochettino said at half-time against Man City in the CL

Tottenham Hotspur were a part of perhaps one of the most entertaining matches in Champions League history last season when they took on Man City at the Etihad.

The Lilywhites were 1-0 from their home leg and stood a real chance of making their first-ever semi-final if they could put in a performance away to the Premier League champions.

However, any Spurs fan, player, or member of the management team who was hoping for a boring 0-0 would have been left biting their nails at the 4-3 encounter.

Spurs lost their aggregate lead inside four minutes when Sterling found the back of the net, before Heung-min Son scored twice before the 10-minute mark to make it 3-1.

Bernardo Silva and Sterling then added a second and third for Man City on the night, sending the two teams in at half-time with the scores level at 3-3 on aggregate.

Toby Alderweireld has now revealed what was said by Pochettino at half-time, as Spurs went on to win the tie.

In a BT Sport interview, he told Jermain Jenas and Jake Humphrey: “It was just like, try to play, keep playing, because we know they want to put us under pressure and if we keep kicking long balls and only defence, it is only going to get worse and worse, so try to play.

“Because he saw in the first half when we tried to play on the break we could hurt them a lot so we tried to hurt them so they didn’t feel the confidence to put us under pressure all the time. But, you know, at the Etihad it is very difficult to do that.”
