Alderweireld reveals what was said to Eriksen after he almost cost Spurs CL semi-final spot

Tottenham Hotspur went on a historic run to the Champions League Final last season, defeating the likes of Borussia Dortmund, Man City, and Ajax on the way to Madrid.

However, things could have been very different if not for VAR in Spurs’ quarter-final second-leg against Pep Guardiola’s side.

With just minutes left on the clock, Spurs found themselves 4-3 down on the night in a topsy turvy affair, but they remained ahead on aggregate thanks to a 1-0 home win.

The Lilywhites just needed to survive an extra minute or two of Man City pressure to book their place in the final four of the competition for the first time ever.

However, as the ball fell to Eriksen in his own defensive half, instead of clearing it he decided to try and play his way out of trouble.

The Great Dane gave the ball away, it was threaded through to Aguero, and the Argentine squared it for Sterling to tap home what seemed to be a late winner.

Much to the relief of Tottenham and Eriksen, the goal was ruled out for offside thanks to VAR and Alderweireld has now revealed what was said in the dressing room afterwards.

Toby told Jermain Jenas and Jake Humphrey in a BT Sport interview: “Yeah, when we came into the dressing room he said like ‘thank God that VAR was there!’

“Everyone was like, ‘kick it, just kick it, just clear the ball!’ Yeah, he wants to keep the ball and very lucky for us and for him that VAR was there.”
