Alderweireld speaks about next season as if he will still be at Tottenham

After challenging for the Premier League title in the 15/16 and 16/17 seasons, Tottenham have fallen way short in the last couple of campaigns.

However, despite competing against sides that have invested considerably more into their first team squads, and having to play most of their home games at Wembley, Spurs have continued to compete in the top end of the table.

In fact, Tottenham are the only team apart from Manchester City to have qualified for the Champions League in all of their last three seasons.

Spurs defender Toby Alderweireld has reiterated the importance of qualifying for Europe’s premier club competition for the fourth season in a row and has suggested that the Lilywhites need to win all their remaining games, starting with the one against strugglers Brighton tomorrow evening.

Speaking to the Mirror, the 30-year-old said, “Tuesday, we know the pressure is on us. We have to get three points, so we have to win all our remaining games in the Premier League.

“We want to get top four and the Champions League as well. We’ll try to get top four, because it’s important to be in the Champions League next year.”

The Belgian center half also said that he is confident that Tottenham can close the gap with the front two going into next season, owing to their consistency in the last few years.

He added, “Last season we were close, so I think we have to do the things that we’re doing now, try to improve and try to close the gap.

“But if you see the last four years how stable we are, always top four, always close, so I think just working hard we will close the gap.”
