Alderweireld speaks out on new contract

One of THE transfer sagas of the summer revolved around Tottenham centre back Toby Alderweireld and whether he would make a £70m move to Premier League rivals Manchester United.

The Belgian defender has been a mainstay in the Spurs defence with his fellow countryman and friend Jan Vertonghen for a few years now.

However, Alderweireld’s contract does come to an end in the summer, with an option for Spurs to extend the deal by an extra year.

This extension would trigger a clause in Toby’s contract that allows the player to leave for £25m in one particular week in the summer transfer window though, which will surely peak the attention of many European clubs.

Tottenham will be keen to tie the defender down to a new bumper deal this season, however is doesn’t appear to be on the horizon, as Spurs concentrate on opening their new stadium.

Jan Vertonghen, Mousa Dembele and Christian Eriksen all also have contracts running into their last year or two at the club.

The Standard claim Alderweireld told Belgian reporters: “Honestly, I am absolutely not thinking about it at the moment. I feel good, play a lot right now and, therefore, am happy. We shall see.”
