Alderweireld to Arsenal? – Some fans react to the shocking news

Toby Alderweireld joined Tottenham Hotspur from Atletico Madrid in 2015.

Ever since, he has played an important role in Mauricio Pochettino’s defensive set up.  The defender has made 111 appearances for the Lilywhites scoring five goals.

In his first season for the club, the Belgian international had been recognised as one of the best defenders in the Premier League by commentators.

His central defensive partnership with national team-mate Jan Vertonghen led Spurs to achieve the best defensive record in the Premier League, with only 25 goals conceded from 34 games.

At the end of the season, the Lilywhites had the joint-lowest number of goals conceded (35) in the Premier League.

The 2016-17 season was even better for the defender. Despite suffering an injury against West Bromwich Albion early on in the season, Alderweireld contributed to Tottenham’s achievement of the best defensive record in the club’s history, with only 26 goals conceded in the Premier League in the entire season.

The defender then suffered a hamstring injury against Real Madrid in the Champions League.

Now, however, that he is back to his best and with his contract slowly coming towards an end, there’s been plenty of speculation about Alderweireld’s future.

According to The Sun, Tottenham’s bitter rivals Arsenal are interested in signing the 30-year-old.

The £25 million release clause which can be activated this summer means that no-one can prevent Arsenal from making this shocking move.

Spurs fans have expressed their thoughts on Twitter and most of them don’t seem to believe that the Belgian international would do what Sol Campbell did in 2001.
