Alderweireld would be a fool to join Manchester United claims former player

Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Micky Hazard has claimed that Toby Alderweireld ‘would be a fool’ if he were to leave the club to join Manchester United.

The Spurs centre back has been at Spurs since 2015 and his current contract expires next summer, however, the club are able to trigger a one-year extension on Alderweireld’s deal which would in turn activate a £25 million release clause for the final two weeks of the summer transfer window.

The Belgian was heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford over the course of last summer’s window, but a move failed to materialise.

Manchester United have struggled to find a consistent central defensive pairing over the past couple of seasons and according to numerous media outlets over the summer had earmarked the 29-year-old as a possible signing.

Alderweireld is said to be holding out for a new deal worth around £180,000 a week (HITC) which would make the club’s second highest earner behind Harry Kane.

Hazard told the Daily Express: “I think Toby’s a brilliant player and he loves Tottenham,”

“If he were to leave Tottenham and join Manchester United with the way the two sides are playing at the moment, at this moment in time – and how they have been for the last few years – then he’d be a fool.”
