Algorithm reveals Tottenham’s chances of winning the Premier League compared to rivals

An algorithm run by a reputable football analytics firm has crunched the numbers and given the probability for each team winning the Premier League, and according to their calculations, Tottenham are only the ninth favourite.

Hardly any pundits had Tottenham finishing in the top four before the start of the season, and that is understandable, given that the Lilywhites had their worst-ever Premier League showing last term, finishing 17th with 22 league defeats.

The Thomas Frank era did get off to an excellent start with a good performance against European champions PSG in the Super Cup, followed by back-to-back wins and consecutive clean sheets against Burnley and Man City.

However, Spurs followed that up with an extremely poor performance against Bournemouth, who dominated the Lilywhites at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with the 1-0 loss arguably flattering Frank’s side.

Tottenham named ninth favourites to win the Premier League

Not even the most optimistic of Tottenham Hotspur fans are expecting a title charge this season, but they might be surprised to learn how far down the club’s chances have been ranked.

According to a study by CIES Football Observatory, the North London club have less than a one per cent chance of winning the title this season.

Unsurprisingly, Liverpool are the favourites, being handed a 28.9 per cent chance of retaining the title, while Arsenal are second at 18.8.

Those two are then followed by Chelsea, Manchester City, Nottingham Forest, Newcastle United, Aston Villa and Manchester United, who have all been given a better chance of getting their hands on the league title than Spurs.

Why Man United may have an advantage in finishing above Spurs

Most Tottenham fans will be surprised that the algorithm has predicted Man United to finish above the Lilywhites, given how poor Ruben Amorim’s men have looked so far this season.

However, like with Spurs in the 2023-24 season, the Red Devils have the luxury of no European football this season, which means that they will be able to name their strongest side more often than not.

In sharp contrast, Tottenham’s schedule gets very tricky when their Champions League campaign gets underway next week, with Frank needing to rotate his squad significantly over the next few months.
