James Maddison says Tottenham Hotspur have demonstrated with their last two performances that they have plenty of character, insisting that the team is shedding the reputation of being ‘soft’.

Even though Tottenham had a good start to the season and had played some excellent football, many expected Ange Postecoglou’s men to fall short at the Emirates in the North London Derby.

Some pundits predicted ahead of the game that the Lilywhites could crumble and find themselves on the receiving end of a hammering (Sportskeeda).

However, despite going behind twice in the encounter, Spurs showed character to bounce back and emerge with a fully deserved point.

Maddison says Spurs are proving people wrong

Even though the away side did give the ball away in some dangerous situations in the first 30 minutes, they did not panic and kept playing out from the back, and were rewarded in the end.

Maddison believes that the performance on Sunday and the late turnaround against Sheffield United proves that this Tottenham side are made of stern stuff.

The 26-year-old told talkSPORT (24/09/23 via The Athletic): “Neutrals talk about Tottenham, they often say; soft, weak, bottle it, Spursy, all that rubbish. I think the last couple of weeks shows we might be going in a slightly different direction.”

Narratives are often more powerful than facts and there is no doubt that the ‘Spursy’ tag will be unfairly thrown at Tottenham the next time they fail to win a game that they are expected to.

Putting that to one side, one cannot help but love Maddison, given the way he has embraced everything about the club so quickly after arriving. Just from his body language on Sunday, one could see that he understood what the derby meant to Spurs fans.
