‘All the time’ – Spurs legend claims Conte needs to strengthen one area

Graham Roberts has declared that Antonio Conte needs another top central defender to make Tottenham into a defensively solid outfit.

So far, in both of his games in charge, Conte has used a back three of Eric Dier, Cristian Romero and Ben Davies, with Emerson Royal and Sergio Reguilon as wing-backs.

While some of Tottenham’s defending against Vitesse Arnhem in the Europa Conference League on Thursday left a lot to be desired, the Italian would have been pleased to see his side keep a clean sheet at Goodison Park on Sunday.

Since Conte’s arrival last week, the North London club have been linked with moves for several central defenders including the likes of AC Milan’s Alessio Romagnoli and Inter Milan duo Milan Skriniar and Stefan de Vrij.

Roberts is in no doubt that the Lilywhites need quality additions at the back if they are to stop leaking goals.

The legendary Spurs defender told ThisIsFutbol: “We need another centre-half.

“I think [Cristian] Romero is brilliant, but he needs somebody like Conte had at Inter.

“He needs a really tough centre-half that doesn’t give goals away. We give goals away all the time.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I do believe that Conte will want to assess the squad closely over the next few weeks before deciding who he wants to keep at the club. I am pleased to see that he has given Ben Davies a go at left-centre-back.

Despite the hate that the Welshman gets from some parts of the Spurs fan base, I believe he is well-suited to that role. I can see Conte really taking to the former Swansea man.
