All you need to know about Spurs target Maxi Gomez

Tottenham Hotspur are reported to be interested in adding a striker to the squad in the summer. With Fernando Llorente’s contract running out at the end of the season, Spurs are in the lookout for an understudy to Harry Kane.

While Llorente has done his job when called upon this season, having already notched up six goals and three assists in 2019, the club still need a long-term alternative.

The latest striker to be linked with the club is Celta Vigo striker Maxi Gomez. According to a report in the Mirror, Tottenham will make a bid for Gomez this summer.

Here’s all you need to know about the La Liga sensation.

Full Name: Maximiliano “Maxi” Gomez Gonzalez

Age: 22

Club: RC Celta de Vigo

Nationality: Uruguay (9 international caps so far)

Position: Center Forward/Striker – Can play as a lone striker or with a partner.

Playing Style: Maxi Gomez plays as a No. 9 for Spanish club Celta Vigo and is an all-around center forward who can drop deep and get involved in the build-up play and also get into the box to score goals. Gomez is technically excellent and despite being a striker is also an excellent passer of the ball when he drops deeper.

Gomez isn’t blessed with a lot of pace but has the skill to make a yard of space for himself. He rarely troubles opposition defenses with runs in behind but he is very good at finishing off crosses first time both with his head as well as feet. In a lot of respects, he is similar to a 23-year-old Fernando Llorente.

Strengths: Aerial ability, hold up play, first time finishing.

Weaknesses: Mobility, ability to get in behind the defence.

Highlights of His Career: Maxi Gomez shot to prominence after joining Celta in the summer of 2017. In his first year in La Liga, the Uruguayan notched up 17 goals in 39 appearances for his club, thus earning a call up to Uruguay’s World Cup squad. He has been one of the few bright spots for Celta this season, having already notched up nine goals and five assists so far this season as his team fight to avoid the drop.

Rumor rating: B –
While Gomez certainly fits the profile that Spurs would be looking for to bolster their striking department, the only link with the player seems to be the aforementioned report from the Mirror. With Barcelona also said to be holding an interest in acquiring the 22-year-old’s services, it is not clear if Gomez will be easy to get.
