Ally McCoist claims Spurs and Liverpool making CL Final made a ‘mockery’ of the competition

It seems like an eternity ago that Tottenham Hotspur fell short of their Champions League dream, losing to Liverpool in the final in Madrid back in June.

However, Pochettino’s men did themselves proud in Europe all season, defeating the likes of Inter Milan, PSV, Borussia Dortmund, Man City, and Ajax.

Tottenham also finished in the top four of the Premier League for the fourth year running, meaning that they qualify among Europe’s elite once again.

Having said that, Tottenham have never won a Premier League title and neither have Liverpool for that matter.

For this reason, Rangers legend Ally McCoist believes that last year’s CL Final made a mockery of the competition as a whole, as neither finalists were Champions at all.

The actual reigning Champions of England were Man City, who were knocked out by Tottenham way back in the quarter-finals.

McCoist is now calling for the competition to change its name (TalkSPORT): “The tournament is effectively wrongly named. They call it the Champions League and there are probably more teams that don’t win their championship in it now.

“So, effectively, the name of the tournament makes a mockery of the tournament.

“The Champions League last year was contested by two teams who haven’t won their championship in a combined total of 85 years. Think about what I’ve just said there.

“This is the point I’m making, the cup shouldn’t be called the Champions League.

“If you’re going to continue with it in this format, change the name of it.”
