‘Almost embarrassing’ – Harry Redknapp on Dele Alli’s Tottenham return

Harry Redknapp has called Dele Alli’s Tottenham return ‘almost embarrassing’ after he started on the bench in Everton’s dismal 5-0 defeat.

Alli secured a move to the Toffees from Spurs in January after his career in North London appeared to have hit a brick wall.

Things have yet to improve under Frank Lampard, with the 25-year-old still waiting to earn his first Everton start since making the move to Merseyside.

Alli was introduced from the bench in Monday’s dismal display against Spurs and, with his side already down and out of the contest, Dele struggled to stamp his mark on a wretched evening for the visitors.

Upon Alli’s arrival at Everton, Lampard initially expressed excitement to be working with the midfielder despite his troublesome form of late (BBC Sport).

But former Spurs boss Redknapp believes something is already wrong with the move for him not to have made an impact thus far.

He told talkSPORT: “What’s happened to Dele Alli? Frank [Lampard] brought him in and was so excited about signing him, there’s got to be something wrong with what he’s doing as he can’t get in the team.

“He goes back to Tottenham last night and it’s almost embarrassing. He was such a big player and when you go back to your old club you don’t want to sit on the bench.

“You want to show them what you can do. He’s done nothing since he’s been there.

“I’ve been one of his biggest fans, but there’s a few of them that need to start performing as they are in desperate trouble.”

Alli’s Everton career hasn’t got going at all just yet and it is tough to see. The move seemed a bit odd in the first place considering the club is in such a poor position currently, and the environment is likely not the best place for a player like Alli to try and rediscover some form.
