‘Already made a decision’ – Son Heung-min confirms post-retirement plans

Son Heung-min has revealed that he will not go into coaching once he hangs up his boots but admitted that he wants to give back to the game in some capacity.

Despite being 31 years of age, Son is certainly not showing any signs of decline, with the South Korean having found the back of the net 14 times and provided eight assists so far this season (Transfermarkt).

According to various reports over the last few weeks, Tottenham intend to tie the forward down to a new contract and have already held preliminary discussions with his entourage (Football Insider).

Heung-min Son does not want to become a coach

However, there is no doubt that the Tottenham captain is now closer to the end of their career than he is to the start and he has admitted that he has thought about his post-retirement plans.

When asked about his previous comments about not wanting to be involved in the coaching side of the game after retiring, Son told Harper’s BAZAAR Korea (via MK): “Yes. “It’s a promise with me and I’ve already made a decision. I love and like soccer, but I don’t have the ability to teach others, and sometimes I love the moment I kick the ball myself. Of course, I will be close to soccer.”

However, the Tottenham man emphasised that he still has grand ambitions in his career, including lifting silverware.

When asked what his current dream is, Son said: “Soccer player Son Heung-min is really greedy. It’s just that I can’t be seen outside, I want to win every game, I want to win, I want to lift the trophy.”

Coaching, especially at the highest level, is quite a unique profession, which is ruthlessly difficult and requires a special sort of personality. The vast majority of the players are simply not going to make good coaches and Son has evidently realised that he is not cut out for the role.
