‘Also Spence’ – Conte asked who could play right-wing-back vs Newcastle

Antonio Conte has suggested he has a good problem at right-wing-back at the moment, with Emerson Royal returning from suspension and Matt Doherty returning to full fitness.

During the opening portion of the season, Emerson Royal was starting every single game on the right side of Tottenham’s defence, until the Brazilian picked up a red card against Arsenal in the North London Derby.

This gave Matt Doherty a way back into the side, and the Irishman has impressed considering his lack of football since the season-ending injury he picked up at the end of the last campaign.

Conte also made sure to mention Djed Spence in his answer, who has been handed a couple of cameos off the bench in the dying minutes this past week.

However, the Italian indicated that he is still waiting to see improvements from the former Nottingham Forest loanee before he can talk about starting him.

Conte said (Football London): “This is the last problem for me if these are the only problems for us then I’m happy. It’s not a problem for me to recover him is good news and you know very well that this role you lose a lot of energy in the game.

“Matthew played with the national team and then two games in a row with us. He played the last three games in the Premier League. To have the possibility to play Doherty or Emerson or I’m waiting to improve also Spence. We’ll see on Sunday.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

I think Conte will put Emerson back into the XI just to freshen the legs up a little, even if Matt Doherty has arguably been better than the Brazilian this season. One thing is for sure, Spurs need to invest at wing-back over the next six months.
