‘Always a threat’ – Postecoglou highlights one Spurs star for praise against Forest

Ange Postecoglou has admitted that he is delighted with Timo Werner’s impact since arriving at the club and praised the forward for the hard-working display he delivered against Nottingham Forest.

It is fair to say that there was quite a bit of scepticism about the Werner signing when the wide-man arrived through the door on loan from RB Leipzig in January.

However, right from the second he stepped out onto the field, it was quite clear that the German international was a natural fit for Postecoglou’s system.

The 28-year-old has now established himself as a regular starter for his new club and he was once again Tottenham’s most potent attacking threat against Nottingham Forest on Sunday, playing a key hand in the Lilywhites’ opening goal.

Ange Postecoglou is pleased with Timo Werner

When asked about Werner’s display, Postecoglou told Football.London: “Yeah I thought Timo was good. Worked hard, always a threat. He ran at the opposition really well, and contributed to our first goal. The second half in particular he helped us, really pinned them back. Yeah, I thought he was ok.”

The Tottenham head coach insisted that the club knew exactly what they were getting when they decided to bring the former Chelsea man through the door.

When asked if he thought Werner would be a regular starter when the club signed him, Postecoglou responded: “At the moment he’s doing everything well. He didn’t start a few weeks ago. But we brought him in because we knew we’d need him, and that’s how it’s proved.

“We also knew we were getting a player who’d already played at this level so he wasn’t really a risk for us and he’s been a good contributor. And with the run-in we’ve got – Newcastle next week and then a couple of big weeks with midweek games – obviously we’ll need the whole squad.”

We know that Ange loves direct wingers who look to continuously take on defenders and make runs in behind. The German’s work off the ball is also second to none, which is why it is a no-brainer for Tottenham to activate the option to buy in the summer.
