‘Always liked him’ – Redknapp says Spurs star has ‘stood up to be counted’ under Conte

Jamie Redknapp has hailed Eric Dier’s recent performances, praising the centre-back for the way he has stepped up his game since Antonio Conte’s arrival at the club.

Dier has undoubtedly been one of the biggest beneficiaries of Conte’s arrival at Spurs, with the centre-back making the central sweeper role in the back three his own.

The 27-year-old has helped Spurs keep three clean sheets in their five Premier League games under the Italian and has marshalled the backline impressively.

He has also displayed his passing range, picking out some inch-perfect through balls over the top for Tottenham’s attackers.

Conte said this week that he believes Dier has the ability to become of the best central defenders in the world.

Redknapp has now admitted that he has always been a fan of the England international and insisted that the role he has under Conte is perfect for the defender.

The former Spurs midfielder told Sky Sports Football TV channel (22/12/21 at 7:40 pm): “I am a big fan of his (Dier) and I always have been. I think he has stood up to be counted.

“I think there were a lot of players that didn’t perform under Jose and didn’t perform under Nuno.

“I have always liked him. I have liked him as a midfield player when Spurs were successful under the Pochettino era.

“I think this system suits him when he plays in the middle because he has a lovely range of passing. He gets the right amount of movement moving forward.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I am among the minority of Spurs fans who have always rated Dier. Even under Jose, I thought the 27-year-old was our best defender, even though he did make some unforced errors in the second half of last season.

I thought Dier was one of the few players in the squad who was good under Nuno and it does not come as a surprise to me that he looks extremely solid under Conte now that he has greater role clarity.
