Spurs refuse to comment on AVB talk

Andre Villas-Boas has turned down the opportunity to manage Sao Paulo, according to the Brazilian club which has fuelled speculation he is set to join Tottenham.

Sao Paulo’s director of football, Adalberto Baptista, has claimed an approach was made for Villas-Boas’ services which was rebuffed by the former Chelsea boss.

Baptista told Globo Esporte: “He today said that he doesn’t want to manage Sao Paulo. He prefers to have more time to plan things, but I have no time to wait.”

It’s a strange turn of events since AVB was quoted as describing the links with Tottenham as “lies” at the weekend. As we all know, nothing is ever simple at Spurs!

Spurs refused to comment when they were contacted by ESPN today – so maybe there is something in this one?

Have something to tell us about this article?

  1. Or maybe they are sick and tired or being asked questions they have no intention of answering until they actually appoint a manager! Now Harry-leaks has departed the press are not getting the same level of access to stories from Spurs as they have the last 4 years.

  2. The 'lies' thing was reported without any real context – this is, after all, silly season for football stories – so it's probably best just to ignore it.

  3. The longer the delay in naming a successor to Redknapp the more speculation there's going to be by the pundits and press alike who all think that they are in the know.
It's certainly nothing new for Spurs to be linked to every Tom, Dick and Harry whether fact or fiction, which is more often than not fiction especially now that old slack jaw has gone.

  4. That AVB asked for more time to plan things suggests there’s no done deal at Spurs but he’s definitely a candidate. So basically, exactly what we already knew.
